According to the mythology of the FOX drama Alcatraz, the closure of the infamous island prison was precipitated by the disappearance of two hundred fifty six inmates and forty six guards on March 21, 1963. Close to fifty years later, what amounts to the worst criminal elements of the Twentieth Century are reappearing in the present with no signs of aging, no explanation regarding their apparent time traveling and an inherent desire to return to their illicit ways. It is thus left to FBI agent Emerson Hauser, San Francisco police detective Rebecca Madsen and historian Diego “Doc” Soto to track them down while likewise attempting to solve the mystery that surrounds them. Alcatraz uses the traditional “crime of the week” format of a regular police series, combined with flashbacks to the 1960s and a dash of sci-fi, to create a uniquely entertaining romp through both the past and the present.
