The Mercury Men
The sci-fi webseries The Mercury Men is a finely-tuned thriller about a plot by inhabitants of the planet Mercury to destroy the Earth by pulling the Moon directly into its path. With only secret government agent Jack Yaeger and reluctant office worker Edward Borman to prevent the destruction of mankind, this black-and-white production has a Flash Gordon movie serial “feel” to its narrative but in reality is an original webseries that likewise pays homage to science fiction of the past. In addition to the cliffhanger nature of old-school serials, for instance, The Mercury Men is equally inspired by such 1950s films as The Day the Earth Stood Still, Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest and the Star Wars and Indiana Jones flicks of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg. In the end, creator Christopher Preksta has taken the best elements of classic storytelling and transformed them into something fresh and contemporary—as well as entertaining.
