The Variants
The comedy webseries The Variants follows the exploits of the employees from the real world Zeus Comics in Dallas, Texas. Although the staff may be the same in both the fictional and actual store, the webseries itself is not a documentary but an entertaining sitcom filmed exclusively for the World Wide Web. The usual—as well as unusual—storylines of retail life are chronicled, along with references to the comic book industry and geeks in general. Narrative threads regarding financial woes and unfulfilling relationships connect the standalone storylines of each episode, while the characters are more than mere caricatures but the types of people that one can relate. The CBS comedy The Big Bang Theory, along with the Felicia Day-created webseries The Guild, have proven that geeks are again cool, and The Variants extends that epitaph while proving to be a worthy part of the growing trend.
